Animal rights have not always been a topic of discussion. However, within the last few decades we have seen an increasingly large amount of animal rights groups emerge, such as The Humane Society, and PETA, to name a few. Not only have groups emerged, court cases and laws pertaining to the care of animals and how they should be treated in the home and in the entertainment industry have also came about within the last century. Particularly in the entertainment industry, there have been numerous reports of abuse and neglect, and even death. Even though there are laws in affect that are supposed to protect these animals from situations like neglect, abuse, and torture; the government does not do a good job in enforcing these laws.
The USDA inspects places in the entertainment industry, like zoos, circuses, etc., but this does not include the places that they travel to. Let's not mention that they spend more than 90% of their time traveling around the United States. Therefore, that lacks inspection for long periods of time.
Another problem is the way that the government chooses to handle the mistreatment of animals. What I mean by this is that instead of removing the animal from the abusive situation or from wherever they are being mistreated at, they just impose a fine on that certain zoo or circus. The problem with this is that by only imposing a fine, the government is not forcing the place to treat the animal with any more respect than it already did.
I think that the government should come up with a different course of action for the sake of the animals. Perhaps the owners of these places are to blame, perhaps the workers are to blame. Despite whose fault it is, there needs to be a change. However, on the plus side, coming up with certain rules and regulations regarding animals rights in the home, and in the entertainment industry, is not the problem. The problem is finding certain people or groups of people to actually enforce the laws that are already put into place.
